Gladstone gaol

Gladstone has some of the largest grain silos in SA & is surrounded by wheat & sheep. Together with Peterborough it is one of two places in southern hemisphere where you can still see 3 railway gauges (Broad, Standard & Narrow)

Historic Gladstone gaol 1881 -1975. Second largest rural gaol in Australia with 125 cells. During World War 11, it was used as an internment camp for Italian & German internees. For a short while it was under the command of the Army & used as a military prison.

During late 1979 the gaol "reopened" under the fictitious name of Gatunga whilst Smiley Films P/L used the complex to recreate prison life for the movie STIR starring Bryan Brown

Check out Bob behind the door hatch

We were lucky enough to have a gentleman who was a Superintendant officer @ this gaol & now running the tours, so really had some inside stories told to us

Laura

Laura main street is line with peppercorn & gum trees & many art & craft shops. Every April they hold the Laura Folk festival a 2 day celebration of music, art & food. It is also home to Golden North ice cream factory ( & we didn't get to taste any!!!!)

Statue of Australian writer & poet, CJ Dennis who wrote "Sentimental Bloke", spent part of his childhood in Laura

Melrose

Melrose is cradled at base of impressive Mount Remarkable. The oldest town in Flinders ranges established in 1840 due to copper being found.

Blundstone blacksmith shop. This was a real find, still had all the blacksmiths bellows, handmade nails etc in front of store & out the back was a cute coffee cafe

Some old car buffs, were having a weekend away & stopped for coffee, which gave us time to have a look at their bright & shiny cars
