Marree - true Outback town

Marree's claim to fame is that it is either the beginning or end of Birdsville & Oodnadatta tracks

Welcome to Marree

Multiculturalism came early to Marree, Afghan cameleers, Aboriginals, Europeans lived in relative harmony as the fortunes of the town ebbed & flowed with emerging Outback pastoralism, the Overland Telegraph, the Old Ghan railway & the cattle industry.

Originally called Hergott Springs after a German botanist travelling with explorer John McDouall Stuart, the town was renamed Marree during World War 1 when anti German sentiment was rife

Road into Marree

This is a hard way to have a trip of a life time

Royal mail truck that delivered the mail to all the outback stations along the Birdsville track

Some old railway buildings

Free camping behind the pub was a real bonus & surprise

This replica Marree mosque is a reminder of "Ghantown", once home to 60 cameleers, their families & 1500 camels

Main drag of Marree

Punters heading to Birdsville for the famous Birdsville races. Never seen so many off roaders cruising the highway, definitely they were ALL on a mission, NOT to miss a race or a beer !!!
