Laverton

Drove 125km east to Laverton. Why Laverton.........no reason, just because we could. Laverton is the end of the bitumen road to travel further east is definitely 4WD territory. This gravel road is called "The Outback Highway" it takes you through Aboriginal community of Warburton approx 500kms, then onto Alice Springs & eventually ending in Cairns some 3000kms later, just a lot of dust, sand, flies & outback scenery. They have a great display at tourist info centre called "Great Beyond", history of all the early explorers. As you can see by the photos not alot happening in Laverton, just another mining town. We had planned to go out to one of the camps of explorer Hann's camp, but because they are still actively mining & blasting the road was closed.
Our van battery decided to give up the ghost this morning & needed someone to jump start us & we headed off towards Kalgoorlie as none of the small towns along the way, have the right battery for the van. Stopped the nite in Menzies & then drove 136kms to Kalgoorlie & picked up a new one.

Mauve wildflowers along the roadside

Desert Inn hotel. Had a beer & watched the cycling from Commonwealth games. Only about 6 people in pub & that included the barmaid @ 5pm

Mural on the wall

Old Coach house building (most of the buildings were in this state

Dr Laver rode his bike from Coolgardie which is about 350kms south & helped set up the hospital & they called the town after him.
